Harvested two varieties of basil this morning. This is Lavender Basil. I love it!
Hanging to dry with Sweet Italian 🌿 Reminds me of many years ago when this was a weekly chore.

Canna - hummingbirds love then. Due to winters here (WI)and ground freezing, I have to dig in fall, store in root cellar, then replant each spring otherwise they rot.
Trying to imagine the flavor of lavender basil . . . and can't quite get there!
Isn’t it a soothing scented process? Even more so when the house is closed and the scent wafts through every room. Today the temperature is only 89 and we have a great breeze all day. No shut doors or windows here!
Thank you Dee! When I took possession of the house and property last August 2nd the area they are in was overcome. With one of those ground covers some folks seem to fancy . The problem here is it was choking out everything else in the same area except two cedar trees.
So I began with cutting off the water supply and eventually weed eatering it to the ground. This poor plant had only two shoots coming up . Now there are five and the decades old lilac tree is improving daily. Amazing what sun and water does for plants.
Now that I know what they are I may look for more. This can be the flower garden. A mix of perineal and annuals.
MP it is the appearance that spawned the lavender reference. The scent and taste is an amazing variation on Basil!
Oooh. Lavender basil! I have never heard of it - I will have to hunt it down for next year. I love hanging herbs to dry - they are the one crop that you get you enjoy constantly - fresh, while they dry and after they are dry. Cute kitty!

I believe it got its name because they flower out looking pretty much looking like lavender. Otherwise the Basil effect seems about the same as most varieties. Altho I will add in the drying department they are taking longer. Thicker stems perhaps another commonality with a lavender bush?
The bulbs can be dug out and divided. Watch this fall to see if they stop blooming and die back. If so, cut down and you can dig & divide - each bulb should have one good growing point. Or, if not the flowers develop seed pods - dark seeds are bigger than a pea, harvest them to plant and start more.
