Jam

What else would native Californians do in the 107 degree aka Monsoon season of August?

If you guessed make peach jam you are correct. Raising the kitchen to only 121 degrees which I think beat out Death Valley at 120.

I think an outdoor kitchen should be on your future project list!

I haven't had peach jam in years! My mother used to make it, and she made pear jam as well. -Jenn

121° in the house?? Ouch. But that luscious peach jam is gonna be worth it this winter! (I would have felt like I WAS in Death Valley.)

Central California grows an amazing amount of tree fruit still. A fun fact the San Joaquin valley was referred to as the Bread basket of the world when I was younger as we shipped out so much food to not only the USA but many a country. Raisins made us famous in the movie The Music Man . With the line in Wells Fargo Wagon “I hope I get my raisins from Fresno.”

So pear jam? What was it like consistency wise? Love pears.

Funny you should say that Leigh. I am half way there as the seller built a space outside the dinning area off the kitchen . It was used as a covered BBQ area . I have always figured I would screen it in with some augmentation structurally and do just that. . I think with the enlargement of the next garden and the addition of an orchard the time may be coming sooner than later. 👍

Why is it that so much of our produce ripens during the hottest time of the year? I've been eyeing a boozy peach jam recipe but lack peaches (and the fortitude to replicate Death Valley in my kitchen). You are a marvel. That jam sure looks good.

Well thankyouverymuch!
I am not so much of a marvel as cheap lol!
The farmer where I got my box of peaches is a two hour round trip. So I plunked down my $$ and proceeded to stop by the school my sister teaches from and gave her some then repeated the process with my daughter. I was left with enough for my project and a couple to nosh on.

The problem came when I realized I was going to finish up a few projects first I left undone for multiple down the hill trips. So I put them in the fridge in their box.
Good intentions (gave me away we know where this is going!) aside the jam got started and stopped on Saturday when things went sideways and I had little enthusiasm to start in a late hot afternoon. Opting for a long conversation with my little sister when she called.
Sunday dawned went to services, made a trip after up the hill for a few items and home. To find it early afternoon and hotter than blue blazes. Great but I owned the corner I got myself into and with no room in my small refrigerator freezer I had to can or watch them deteriorate slowly to past jam prime.

Poor planning on my part but I was trying to save fuel and time to buy them another trip. Thanks for your admiration I wave to you from “the road to hell” . . . You can finish that statement 😊
